Drought in Kenya
07/26/2011
According to the BBC News (2011) at least 6 of 10,000 children are dying daily to starvation in East Africa.
The United Nations has officially declared a drought in the horn of Africa. The drought is the worst in 60 years. Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are the predominant three countries affected. The individuals most affected are the orphans that depend on caregivers and supported schools for food. Our field representatives are reporting a rise in the cost of food and fuel, which is forcing schools to close due to the lack of food. With no food in schools, many orphans face starvation. Currently, over 300 children are immediately affected at our supported schools in Nairobi and Namanga: the Cornerstone Academies, Little Rock and Noosikitook. Teachers are taking 40% pay cuts, reducing their salaries to $112-75 per month, with more than 75% of their income paying for shelter.
“If the government does not intervene to bring down food cost, many children may suffer malnutrition.”
You can help!
Your contribution of $30 can help feed a child for a month. That’s less than what is spent on one cup of coffee per day(that's one dollar per day).
Give today… and preserve a child’s life for tomorrow…
